Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEP) are university-qualified allied health professionals.
AEPs are accredited with Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA), the peak professional body and sole accrediting authority. ESSA is also the accrediting body for Accredited Exercise Scientists, Accredited Sports Scientists and Accredited High Performance Managers.
AEP’s are dual accredited, holding the foundational accreditation of Accredited Exercise Scientist (AES) in addition to their AEP status.
To gain and maintain accreditation with ESSA, an AEP must:
Graduate from a minimum 4 years of study in an ESSA accredited university course meeting the AQF requirements for Level 7 that leads to bachelor degree qualifications
Hold and maintain a valid first aid and CPR certificate
Hold and maintain appropriate professional indemnity insurance
Complete an annual continuing professional program comprising 20 points per annum
Uphold the ESSA Code of Professional Conduct and Ethical Practice
An AEP prescribes, delivers, and adapts movement, physical activity, and exercise-based interventions to facilitate and optimise health status, function, recovery, and independence. They provide person-centred care with evidence-based judgment and clinical reasoning to individuals, groups, and the broader community.
Exercise Physiology provides services across a broad range of health spectrums, and an AEP has a large scope of practice that is flexible, adaptable, and embraces evidence-based innovative practices and practice environments.
AEP’s specialise in clinical exercise delivery, education, rehabilitation, and healthy behaviour change. An AEP does not diagnose, provide hands-on treatment, or joint manipulation.
